Cyber security is more important than ever, all businesses are at risk from cyber attack because cyber criminals do not go looking for targets, they already have your email address from past compromises of large organisations such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Okta and many for Australian businesses where at least one of your employees had their email captured and sold on the dark web.
This email address is what is used for Phishing attempts against your organisations and cyber criminals targeting your business are sending out thousands to millions of these emails waiting for 1% of people to click the link. This is how a compromise starts and these same criminals are looking for a fast turnaround which is achieved by watching emails go between your business and your suppliers / customers and waiting for an invoice they can change the bank account details for so when the money is transferred it ends up in a criminals account and is immediately transferred offshore or into crypto currency where it can not be recovered.
This process happens again and again with businesses in Australia and we have dealt with many who were unable to recover the money to help them build stronger defences against a repeat attack.
Where to start with cyber security
This is the question that is always asked, because cyber security vendors and consulting organisations make it sound so hard, its not, seriously, cyber security is NOT HARD, but it does require a consistent and measured approach, often this will come down to:
(Usability and complexity) vs (cost and applicability), meaning what do you as a business need to do to have a Minimally viable security posture (MVP).
It might be that all you need to implement is Multifactor Authentication (often a PIN code in addition to your password).
